Shoulder Pain: Understanding & Treating It

The common causes of shoulder pain and how physiotherapy-based, non-surgical pathways can help.

What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain refers to discomfort around the shoulder joint and its surrounding muscles, tendons and bursa. Because the shoulder is highly mobile and used constantly — at work, in sport, and for everyday tasks — problems here can be frustrating. Most shoulder pain is mechanical and responds well to the right non-surgical approach.

Common Causes

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

  • Rotator cuff issues — inflammation, tendonitis or tears causing pain and weakness.
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) — progressive stiffness over months.
  • Impingement — pinching of tendons during overhead movement.
  • Bursitis and tendonitis — inflammation from overuse.
  • Shoulder osteoarthritis — joint wear with pain and reduced range.
  • Referred pain from the neck — cervical spine issues felt in the shoulder.
Common Symptoms

Symptoms to Watch For

When to Act

When to See an Orthopedic Doctor

  • Weakness that prevents carrying objects.
  • Pain after an injury, fall or dislocation.
  • Shoulder pain with chest symptoms — this requires urgent care.
Evaluation & Care

How Shoulder Pain Is Evaluated & Managed

Evaluation begins with your history and a structured shoulder examination that also checks the neck. Ultrasound, X-ray or MRI may be requested selectively. Management usually includes a graded exercise program, pain control, activity modification and, for certain conditions, injections. Surgery is rarely the first step.

Note: For a frozen shoulder, patience and consistent gentle exercise typically matter more than aggressive stretching or immediate surgery.
